Winter

The Normandy countryside has a special charm at any time of year even in the middle of winter. The bare trees allow one to explore and peak into hidden corners normally concealed by the leaves and make a stunning, stark foreground to a glorious sunset

The villages, towns and cities still bustle, especially in the build up to Christmas. In December the Christmas lights go up in even the smallest, most isolated communes. These make a wonderful sparkling display in the clear night air and with no light pollution the stars are also at their most splendid.

The Christmas lights in Putanges are a delight, some reflecting in the river while those on the Marie (Town Hall) change each year
.

From mid-November onwards there are always Christmas markets (Marché de Noel) to be found somewhere and with the many and varied stalls displaying the work of local artisans, plenty of opportunity for Christmas shopping with a difference.

In addition to its many shops, from designer to department, Caen has streets lined with many stalls throughout December. After a hard morning shopping, interrupted only by a hot chocolate or coffee, it offers a wide range of places for leisurely lunch, either close to the Ducal chateau or by the port.

Le Bosquet in the snow

When the snow falls it is magical and brings its own beauty to everything and is a time to wrap up warm and go for a walk and enjoy it before coming back to the welcoming open fire at Le Bosquet for and a warming drink .
